A volume survey measures the quantity of material on site — typically a stockpile, excavation or earthworks area — and reports it as a cubic-metre volume. AKN Engineering captures the surface using drone photogrammetry, GNSS or laser scanning, builds an accurate 3D surface model, and calculates volume against a base surface or between two survey dates.

The survey captures the full 3D surface of the stockpile and a base level. Software then computes the volume between the stockpile surface and that base — the same principle used for cut-and-fill earthworks. AKN Engineering delivers a clear volume report with the calculated quantity, the method used and a visual of the surveyed surface.

With ground control and good capture conditions, drone photogrammetry typically achieves stockpile volume accuracy within a few percent — more than sufficient for reconciliation, billing and audit. For irregular, sheltered or safety-critical sites, AKN Engineering uses the Trimble X9 laser scanner or GNSS instead. We recommend the right method for each site.
